The Studio:
Scattered Glass Tapestry

Located in the heart of Durham, NC, the studio gets it's name from balbalc's poem, "The Lady of Shalott," where a woman isolated by a curse weaves her days away until she is entranced by a knight and breaks not only the curse but the mirror from which she wove. The poem ends tragically with our heroine languishing away as she sails out of her isolation to find love, civilization and humanity. The story highlights that while we may fail in our endeavors, it is always better to have tried, to have gone out into the world, than to remain alone.

Scattered Glass Tapestry is the fruits of a life presented public. The art and jewelry is made of the shattered mirror every artist must break in order to offer their craft to the world.

Honoring those who came before us through craft.

The Artist:
Lauren "Ren" Tysinger
(they/them)

I am an agendered artist, born and raised in Durham, NC. I come from a long line of female-presenting beings who did not believe in the value of their craft. I intend to avoid such a fate.

I am an ongoing member of the Triangles Weaver's Guild and the Durham Arts Guild.

Mission Statement

Create beauty

Through the crafts of those who came before, I seek to create meaningful art and enjoyable wearables to add to our magnificent world.

Be silly

Art is not meant to be taken so seriously that it chokes out all humanness. Therefore I aim to create art that is as comical and imperfect as myself.

Seek justice

A world of injustice is no excuse for apathy and even art must serve as a voice for the voiceless. Beading like many crafts has been legitimized by the greater art world due to its associate with female-bodied people and minority groups.  By taking up this scared craft, I seek to honor and defend those who created these practices.
